World Cup bids continue

Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani helped Portugal to a 2-0 friendly victory over South Africa on Tuesday night as Carlos Queiroz's side bounced back from a disappointing goalless draw in Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Sweden.Nani started the match on neutral territory in Switzerland, while Ronaldo came on in the 56th minute in place of Chelsea midfielder Deco, who set up both of Portugal's goals for Bruno Alves and Edinho from corners.Meanwhile, United goalkeeper Ben Amos helped England's U20s to a 2-0 victory over Italy at Loftus Road after coming on as a half-time substitute. The victory got England’s preparations for the FIFA U20 World Cup off to a fine start and Amos impressed throughout his 45-minute run-out, pulling off a string of fine saves to ensure a clean sheet for the Three Lions.Fellow Reds' stopper Sam Johnstone, a schoolboy at Old Trafford, followed suit as England U17s completed their Elite Round qualifying games for the last eight of the European Championship Finals with a 2-0 win over Hungary. Johnstone played the full 90 minutes as England maintained their perfect record in the competition.A number of Reds are likely to be in action for the Three Lions' senior side on Wednesday night as Fabio Capello's side entertain the Ukraine in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley. Wayne Rooney, scorer of two of England's four goals in Saturday's friendly win over Slovakia, is set to win his 50th cap, while Rio Ferdinand has recovered from the back injury which kept him out of the Slovakia victory. Michael Carrick and Ben Foster are also in the squad.
